8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Unity College
90 Quaker Hill Road
Unity, Maine

It's an exciting time for GIS in Maine. The Maine GeoLibrary Board has been very active on projects that will help municipalities and others implement and use GIS. The timing of our Annual Meeting and focus on the use of GIS within Maine couldn't be better. We are looking forward to an informative day-long GIS session with "Users helping Users".

Geospatial Applications for Facilities Management: Creating A Campus GIS
Christopher J. Kittredge, Department of Geography and Anthropology, University of Southern Maine

Facilities management Geographical Information Systems (GIS) has many advantages for a college campus. This presentation demonstrates some of these advantages that were achieved by creating a pilot GIS for the University of Southern Maine (USM) Department of Facilities Management (DFM). Work began by georeferencing archived AutoCAD drawings of land surveys and utilities plans to 15-centimeter resolution orthorectified digital aerial photographs to create basemaps of USM's three campuses. The resulting GIS layers were ground-truthed with a Global Positioning System (GPS). Four applications of GIS technology for campus facilities management were explored: 1) Utility Metrics; 2) Outside Lighting; 3) Classroom Scheduling; 4) Storm Water Runoff Calculator. These applications demonstrate the benefits of GIS for a small college campus system, such as USM, comparable to those realized for larger campuses with greater resources. Immediate benefits include: managing underground utilities; recreating lost as-built records; and preventing damage to existing utilities during construction projects. The USM DFM is beginning implementation of the GIS piloted during this project, and is using applications in their operations.

A Model of Efficiency: Using New Ways to Communicate in Developing a Sewer System GIS for the City of Biddeford, Maine
Todd Gys, GIS Specialist, CDM

As the City of Biddeford progresses with a city-wide sewer separation, the need for a more organized way to manage utilities and their associated plans was identified. A functioning GIS was a viable solution that would assimilate different sources into a seamless dataset that would be accessible to a broad range of users. New ways of sharing data and designs were implemented and resulted in a well executed GIS.

Implementing GIS in a Rural Telecommunication Company
R. Michael White, President, Dirigo Spatial Systems, Inc.

Mid-Maine Communications, a medium sized local exchange telecommunications company in central Maine, has been gradually upgrading its mapping system from an AutoCAD-based system, to a fully functional, multi-user GIS. This presentation looks at the process and discusses objectives and goals for the future.

Scholarship Winner Presentation: Unity College Campus GIS Trail Project
Rick Kristoff, Student, Unity College

The GIS Trail Project on the Unity College Campus came about because of a need to figure out how the on-campus trails connect to the Maine Interconnected Trail System (ITS). Although many people know the layout of the trails it became apparent to me as the project moved on that some did not. These people included staff members, faculty, and other students. As the project developed, more groups discovered they had a use for such a tool. One particular use was events inside the classroom. The new map would allow a professor to virtually walk along the trail on the computer to show the students where they were going to go.

Location based Systems
Chris Frank, CEO & Founder, Intelligent Spatial Technologies

Mr. Frank will present a spatially aware device his company is developing which combines GPS and GIS. The system allows users to point at a geographical feature to retrieve information about it.

Building a Historical GIS to Examine the Changing Urban Morphology of Bangor, Maine, 1850-1920
John H. Clark, Historical Atlas of Maine Project, Canadian-American Center, University of Maine

This past year Mr. Clark has been working for Prof. Stephen Hornsby on the Historical Atlas of Maine ( http://www.umaine.edu/canam/cartography/projects.html) which will be published by the University of Maine Press next spring. He is authoring three plates and just recently completed one titled "From Picturesque Cottages to Streetcar Suburbs", which examines the changing urban morphology in Bangor from 1850 to 1920. One of the key sources for the cartography in this plate was a GIS project he began under Prof. Kathleen Bell of the Resource Economics Dept. last fall. He geocoded roughly 7,000 residential properties in Bangor from fy2006 property tax data and then used the "Year Built" field to plot the growth of the city. The data set goes all the way back to the year 1782. For the19th and early 20th century, he has supplemented the data from primary cartographic sources such as Sanborn insurance maps and contemporary atlases.
