LiDAR (Part I) The LiDAR seminar covers the full gamut of all aspects of LiDAR in terms of the LiDAR industry. It is intended to provide basic knowledge of LiDAR, while still providing a level of technical aspects to intelligently address potential LiDAR programs and have a level of knowledge to communicate with LiDAR vendors and industry professionals. The Seminar will cover a brief overview of Sanborn Map Company and then the basics of LiDAR including LiDAR systems, project planning, collection practices, processing, deliverables and formats. Then, applications and applications trends, software developments, hardware developments, special considerations for LiDAR collections and programs, new developments will be covered. After, a project profile will be presented and we will describe some industry products and services. Lastly, a brief demonstration on LiDAR software and data will be given and then time will be provided for questions. |

Web GIS - GIS Data Delivery on the Web with Google Earth Chris Halsted, GIS Programmer/Analyst Maine Department of Environmental Protection This workshop will focus on getting GIS practicioners familiar with the functionality of Google Earth that can be used to deliver GIS data quickly and inexpensively via the internet. It will include a review and demonstration of the current Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Google Earth projects to demonstrate the wide range of features currently available such as linking to pictures, .pdf reports, other web sites, spatial and business data dissemination, graphing, web databases, security and using third-party layers and services. We will review the process for developing a Google Earth project. This will include a review of the simple, open source development tools used, development resources on the web to assist you in learning KML, getting your data out of GIS, the different layer types that can be used in KML files and integrating KML files with your existing web site. The last portion of the workshop will include writing some simple KML files in order to see firsthand how they are built. No prior programming knowledge is necessary to write KML. |

Emerging Trends & Technologies in Mapping Sciences Claire Kiedrowski, CP, KAPPA Mapping, Inc. This workshop provides an overview of emerging trends and technologies and their impact on the surveying, mapping, photogrammetry and remote sensing communities. The advance towards full digital mapping from start to finish, and the capacity to capture very large amounts of data supported by rapid processing and software will alter the way maps and imagery are produced in the near future. At the same time, active sensors, hand-held data collection devices, and feature extraction are changing fundamental mapping procedures and the way data is supplied to GIS. Participants will receive an overview of the systems, technologies, and impacts on mapping in the next two to three years, as well as, the institutional issues involved in implementation. Workshop topics include: satellite sensors, digital cameras, direct georeferencing (GPS, IMU), active sensors (lidar, laser scanning, etc.), mobile mapping, supporting technologies, and Model Law licensure. |

MEGUG Annual Business Meeting and Announcements MEGUG Board and Members All meeting attendees are welcome to join MEGUGs Members and Board for our annual, but brief, business meeting. The board will consider business issues brought to the floor by members at the meeting. In addition to any issues raised by members, we have two major agenda items:
The board wishes to let our members know that after many years of service to MEGUG, that Greg Copeland wishes to step down. Greg has been tireless over the course of his tenure in making MEGUG better and more organized. We appreciate the hard work he has put into our group. New board nominees selected to fill these openings are ______ from _______. Continuing board members wish to express our utmost gratitude to our departing board members for their outstanding service to MEGUG and we hope that our membership will join us in electing ______ to serve on the board. If the election of nominees is successful, the proposed makeup of next year's board will be as follows: Chair - Dan Walters of the USGS At-Large Members: |

Web Data - How to Access the State of Maine's FREE GIS Data Mark Bradstreet, Bradstreet Consultants, Inc. This workshop is for the beginner who is interested in learning how to leverage free or inexpensive data and software. Free software like ArcExplorer 9.x or other GIS software such as ArcView 9.x will be used to demonstrate how to access the State's free GIS data. Although many data types are provided free by the State, this workshop will focus on digital orthophotos, a fundamental basemap for a wide variety of applications. This information can also apply to those using CAD programs such as AutoCAD. A basic overview of the differences between aerial photography and digital orthophotos along with associated accuracies of various orthophoto data sources will be discussed. After attending this workshop, you will be able to access and download orthophotos from the State of Maine's websites as well as learn to connect to a "Web Mapping Service". You will also learn how to place these orthophotos in your GIS or CAD program more accurately and create "World" files as needed to provide real world registration of data. A quick summary of the current status of the state's orthophoto program will be covered. The Maine GeoLibrary Portal, a next step in Enterprise GISChristopher Kroot, GIS Manager Office of Information Technology, Maine Department of Environmental Protection The State of Maine GeoLibrary was created by legislation to provide a number of products and services. A primary service is the implementation of a Geographic Portal to provide registration, discovery and access to Internet-accessible Geographic Information Services (GIS) that provide geospatially referenced data, maps, and geospatially-enabled applications. The Board is comprised of stakeholders that represent the needs of all Maine citizens, governments, academic institutions, industry, NGO's, and others. The Portal is a central piece of the Maine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) which follows the standards and guidelines of the NSDI. It will automatically harvest FGDC compliant metadata. Users shall also be able to manually enter metadata using Web forms, or upload XML files containing metadata to the Portal. The Portal shall employ Catalog Services and shall provide a common mechanism to classify, register, describe, search, maintain and access information about Distributed Geospatial Resources. The Portal will enable the upload of shape files which will be stored in an open source database and WMS will be created on the fly and displayed in the Portal map viewer. This will enable Maine citizens, local governments, academic institutions, industry, NGO's, and others who do not have web servers to provide their geographic data for viewing and download. This project is collaboration between the Maine GeoLibrary Board, Maine Office of Information Technology, Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems, ESRI, and the University of Southern Maine Research Computing Group. |

Web GIS - Creating Web Applications with ArcGIS Server Ben Ouellette, GISP GIS Manager, City of Portland, Maine This workshop will focus on using the out of the box tools provided with ESRI's ArcGIS Server to quickly and easily create web based GIS maps. With little or no programming experience, users can publish very detailed and powerful GIS applications. |
