GIS and Natural Resources: Users Helping Users

Tuesday, June 3, 2003
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The Senator Inn
Augusta, Maine

The Maine GIS Users Group is looking forward to its Annual meeting. We expect an increase in GIS activity and awareness as the Maine Library of Geographic Information gets underway and more and more students are being trained in GIS in Maine. Our theme for speakers is GIS and Natural Resources and we are looking forward to an informative day-long GIS session with "Users helping Users".

GIS and Water Quality in Maine
The ME DEP Bureau of Land and Water Quality has been a leader when it comes to water quality monitoring programs in the United States. Over 15 years of data has been recorded, and is now linked to GIS and the States 24k hydrography layers. This presentation will describe the history of the programs, and how they are working to locate threats, as well as showcase Maine's improvements, to water quality.

Orienteering Mapping in Maine
Orienteering is a sport of navigation with map and compass that requires detailed large-scale maps. Maine's orienteering club, Orienteering Maine(OME), is in the process of creating maps at various locations throughout the state to support these events. This presentation will describe a rapid orienteering map production process that often begins with existing GIS datasets provided by the Maine Office of GIS and utilizes ESRI's ArcPAD software for data acquisition with customizations made with Application Builder. In addition, the creation of ArcGIS styles and templates for cartographic production of orienteering maps will be discussed.

CDM
The Colorado Herpetofaunal Atlas
CDM is working with the State of Colorado in the development of a Colorado Herpetofaunal Atlas. The Colorado Herpetofaunal Atlas was initiated as a means of assembling and displaying information that will facilitate assessments of the distribution, abundance, and conservation status of reptile and amphibian populations throughout Colorado. It is hoped that with this Atlas in place, it will be easier to develop effective management plans.

The New Bachelor of Science Degree in Surveying Engineering Technology at The University Of Maine
The University of Maine has a new Bachelor of Science degree program in Surveying Engineering Technology. This new program will have a natural resources management connection because a Cooperating Faculty member is also a faculty member of the Department of Forest Management, teaching subjects about GIS, GPS and management. In my presentation I will give my perspective of the benefits to the Maine GIS community of the new program in Surveying Engineering Technology based on my experience as a Professional Land Surveyor, doctoral student in the former Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering, and adjunct faculty member at various universities and colleges across New England.
11:45 Annual Business Meeting
12:00 Lunch
1:15 Mark Woodruff,
DEP's Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management
Using Spatial Analysis Tools to Model Sample Point Data
This presentation details ArcGIS extensions that allow users to model point data. Examples will be offered to utilize seismic refraction depths of bedrock and analytical results of groundwater contamination. This presentation is also an opportunity for people to begin discussing other applications of the spatial analysis tools.
1:45 Dale Rowley,
Thorndike Engineering, Inc. and Sari Hou, Unity College in Maine
Tri-County Hazard Mitigation Planning: Demonstrating the Capabilities of GIS Mapping for Use in Hazard Mitigation Planning
In order to meet the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, three Maine Counties initiated efforts to complete Hazard Mitigation Plans. These plans will involve a hazard risk assessment, a critical infrastructure inventory, and mitigation measure development for the 81 municipalities. In order to analyze the data, a Geographical Information System has been developed to illustrate the overlap of hazard vulnerabilities and infrastructure the municipalities possess.
2:15 Chris Rado
James W. Sewall Co.
Integration of GIS and Remote Sensing: Using Landsat Imagery to Map Temporal Change in Southern Pine Plantations
From 1999 to 2002 pine plantations in the Southeastern United States were subjected to significant mortality due to infestation by the pine beetle. Sewall employed two remote sensing methods for image classification: RGB-NDMI, developed by Dr. Steve Sader, and Principal Components Analysis to identify plantations killed by pine beetles. Classified images were converted to vector data and GIS analysis methods were used to refine the classification with ancilliary data to produce a final map layer showing change over the whole period. This presentation will describe the methods and procedure used to complete this project.
