A Novel Way to Tell Stories:  ArcGIS StoryMaps and Maine’s Bald Eagle Recovery

Maine’s population of Bald Eagles was nearly lost in the 1960s, with a low count of only 21 pairs in 1967.  After over 40 years of monitoring the Bald Eagle population, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife conducted its last statewide aerial survey in 2018 and found a robust population of 734 nesting pairs!  Bald Eagle population management has always involved a substantial spatial data component, so using the ArcGIS StoryMaps application was ideal for telling the story of how Maine’s Bald Eagle population was recovered.  This presentation will discuss both the use of the StoryMaps application and Maine’s Bald Eagle recovery.
